JWC New Leadership Group

Fourteen is a young age to add School Leader to your list of accomplishments but John Willcock College’s newly appointed Leadership group are excited by the opportunity.

Recently representatives from each of John Willcock’s six Sub Schools were appointed to the Leadership group. As part of the role the group of 15 young people will meet regularly, lead lunch and recess activities, fundraise and formally represent the College in the Geraldton community.

To be selected students made written and oral presentations to their peers before students and staff vote on who they would like to represent them.
From the core Leadership group students could nominate and be interviewed by Principal Julie Campbell for School Captain and Vice Captain positions.

School Captain, Luke Hennighan said the interview process was a nerve-wracking experience. “We had a list of questions to prepare for, things like how will you balance your duties as head boy with your academic studies, I couldn’t sleep for a week,” he said.

Many of the Student Leaders are looking forward to the increased responsibilities and the opportunity to develop public speaking skills.

Vice Captain, Zoe De Boni said the best part of being selected for a leadership role was the opportunity to set a good example for other students. “It is not only for the other students but for yourself too so that you feel more confident in yourself,” she said.

“I want to help students be excited about school and feel that it is a safe and good place to be.”

“There are so many great programs at John Willcock, we have Shine, Bling, the extension program, heaps of music programs and bands, it is a great school,” she said.

The leadership students will have their first opportunity to speak to the whole John Willcock College student community at an Anzac Day assembly in April.
