From the Principal

Welcome to John Willcock College. This College is a dedicated Middle School which is large enough to provide a range of options yet still small enough to be able to look after the personal growth of our students with a strong pastoral care program.

The College is divided into 6 Sub Schools. Each Sub School has a Sub School Leader who coordinates a team of 5 teachers (English, Maths, Science, S&E and Health Education).

The Sub School structure has a Team focus and is designed to develop closer relationships between teachers, students and families/caregivers. It enables all stakeholders (school and home) to collaboratively respond to student needs by providing support and encouragement as well as assisting in problem solving as the need arises.

Academic excellence is actively promoted in all areas. Students are encouraged to excel. The College presently conducts two academic extension classes – one in year 8 and one in year 9. Programs that link across subjects have been developed. Literacy programs and additional classroom support are offered to students who experience difficulties in their learning. This enables students to cope and improve in all their areas of learning.

Students participate in various national competitions such as the Australian Mathematics, Science, English, Writing and Computer Studies Competitions, Tournament of Minds (mixed Year 8 and 9). Music and drama performances/competitions also provide opportunities for students in the Arts. The opportunity for participation in inter-school sporting events is also a part of the broad curriculum on offer at John Willcock College.

A cutting edge initiative whereby every student is provided with a notebook computer to enhance learning experiences sets John Willcock apart as the only government school in Western Australia with this level of technology.

Philosophy

Middle schooling practices seek to provide a school experience and educational programs that best suit the learning needs of young adolescents. Middle schooling recognises that young adolescents are adjusting to profound physical, social and emotional change. They are in a process of growing towards independence, with a need to gain experience in decision-making and responsibility as well as develop self-confidence, personal and social values and their own sexual identity, in a safe environment. Middle schooling educational philosophy embraces classroom management and pedagogy that recognises these needs of young adolescents, by catering for different student learning styles.

Pedagogy, popularly defined as “the art and skill of teaching”, is recognised as the critical variable that influences the quality of student learning experience, particularly in terms of student perception of curriculum relevance, achievement of learning outcomes and their empowerment in decisions that affect them. John Willcock College is committed to middle schooling practices that advocate a pedagogy that enables students to have increased opportunities to have a say in what they learn, how they learn, and how their work will be assessed.  The College recognises that a rich range of student-centred strategies best facilitates opportunities for students to undertake studies relative to their intelligences and learning styles.

Curriculum

Students at John Willcock College receive instruction in all 8 Curriculum Learning Areas by qualified specialist teachers.  The Learning Teams provide instruction in Physical and Health Education, English, Maths, Science and Society and Environment.  In addition, all students can access a range of options offered and provided by specialist teachers in Languages Other Than English, The Arts and Technology and Enterprise.

Parent Participation

These partnerships strongly influence the quality of student learning, student attitudes to school and parent support and advocacy for the College.  Productive parent-teacher partnerships are recognised and valued.

Parent-teacher evenings, Sub School and Awards Nights are conducted to facilitate opportunities for parents and teachers to meet. Parents/guardians are also invited to attend full College assemblies and the dates of these assemblies are advertised in the JWC Newsletter. In addition, parents are invited to make appointments to meet with staff to discuss policies and individual student educational needs and progress.
